Coconut Oil is loaded with Medium Chain Fatty Acids. You may have also heard of these called:
- C8: Caprylic Acid
- C10: Decanoic Acid
- C12: Lauric Acid
Coconut oil has become very popular as a human health food due to it’s medium chain fatty acids – which are easily converted into energy or “brain energy” in the form of Ketones. This is why coconut oil is very popular in the ketogenic diet … because it easily gets converted into ketone energy.
But that’s not the only reason for the buzz around Coconut Oil. ~50% of coconut oil is comprised of C12 Lauric Acid – which can kill harmful things like bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
Instead of using vegetable oil in our superfood biscuits, we use coconut oil … and we do that for the health benefits that coconut oil can provide to Bulldogs.
Here are the top 4 reasons why coconut oil is better for your Bulldog than other oils:
- Immune System Benefits
- Brain Health / Neurodegenerative Disease Benefits
- Good for Gut Health / Digestion
#1: Coconut Oil is Good for the Immune System
50% of coconut oil is comprised of a medium chain fatty acid called, “Lauric Acid”. Lauric Acid is most well known for it’s anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungi properties.
When Lauric Acid is digested, your body will also crease a certain enzyme called, “monolaurin” – which also has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungi properties.
It is for these reasons that many times you will find coconut oil being recommended to eat when you have a virus, the flue, yeast infections, etc.
#2: Good for Brain Health / Neurodegenerative Disease
This section could go very deep, but I’ll try to keep it as short as possible without compromising content. A lot of this section is directly tied to the reasons why the ketogenic diet has grown in popularity.
Carbs are the #1 preferred source of energy by our bodies. Meaning – when you eat food with carbs, fats, and proteins … our bodies will use the carbs for energy first. Carbs get broken down into glucose and everything in our body can use glucose for energy.
When your body has no more carbs to burn, it will then turn to fat and burn fat for energy.
The problem is, there are certain organs that cannot use fat for energy (your brain being one). Because of that, your liver has to turn fat into energy called “ketones” … which is a form of energy that your brain can use.
This is the basis of the ketogenic diet. In this diet, you eat very low carbs and high fat. This means that your brain is mostly being powered by Ketones and not by carbs/glucose. When your brain is running off ketones for energy, you are said to be in a state of ketosis.
But not all fat is created equal. There is a type of fat called “medium chain fatty acids” (MCT’s) and that type of fat is more easily converted into ketones than other types of fat. Coconut oil is high in MCT’s … which means it’s filled with fat that can quickly be converted into energy.
Back to brain health … there is a lot of scientific evidence that when your brain is running off ketones instead of glucose, that it helps with neurodegenerative disease. In fact – this is how doctors used to treat epilepsy … they would keep their patients in ketosis and the patients wouldn’t have seizures. There is also a lot of anecdotal evidence that your cognitive abilities increase in a state of ketosis … which is why the ketogenic diet is very popular in silicon valley – where people are really focused on mental capacity.
Having read all that, I want to make it very clear that we are not proposing a ketogenic diet for your dog! It’s just easier to explain why coconut oil often gets tied to brain health when you understand a little bit about the keto diet.
#3: Good for Gut Health / Digestion
Coconut oil improves digestion via a number of ways.
- It helps the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins
- It’s been shown that when taking coconut oil with Omega-3 (fish oils), it can make omega-3 twice as effective. (note: Vital Paws contains both Coconut Oil and Omega-3 Fish Oils)
- Coconut oil helps the gut through it’s anti-bacteria, anti-viral, and anti-fungi properties. This, in-turn, also helps digestion.
- When looking at various fats, Medium Chain Fats are much easier for the body to convert into energy than Long Chain Fats. Coconut Oil is comprised mostly of Medium Chain Fats.
There have been a few studies that have shown the antioxidants contained in coconut oil have reduced inflammation and treated arthritis more effectively than leading medications. (link)
When you are looking for a dog biscuit for your Bulldog … read the label. Find one that uses Coconut Oil as the oil and not other types of vegetable oils.
